Since the beginning of 2018 there have been a total seventeen school shootings, one of the most tragic being what occured at  Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen lives were lost that day, the 14th of February. Across the country, students have been participating in the National Walk Out society, marches in D.C., and organizing their own events in order to honor the memory of those who had passed away. Here at Lake Oconee Academy students were able to buy a green pin for 5$ and wear a green t-shirt and jeans last friday. All of the proceeds, over $3,000, will go to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Additionally, this past Wednesday the LOA band performed a song titled Heaven’s Light in memory of those whose lives were cut short by these tragedies. Junior, Niah Kalpak, spoke prior to the performance. Her eloquent speech dedicated the song to, “ the lives lost not only in the recent shooting in Parkland, but any other lives that have been cut too short”. To close, she stated, “tonight we light 17 candles in honor of those individuals”.
